Free guided walks for ramblers who take the train

Ramblers in Norfolk and Suffolk can take advantage of freeguided walks when they take the train as the Bittern Line and Wherry LinesCommunity Rail Partnerships launch a series of guided walks from rail stations.

The Sunday walks, led by volunteers who are experts on thearea, are free to anyone arriving by train and have been scheduled to fit inwith train times from Norwich.

Detailed in the Bittern and Wherry Lines Area Guides andonline, there is an interesting and picturesque guided walk from stations alongthe Norwich - Sheringham and Norwich – Great Yarmouth / Lowestoft lines takingplace every month from now until 19 June 2016.

The next walk, on Sunday 20 September, is a 7-mile ramblealong paths and lanes from Worstead to Wroxham via Tunstead led by EileenOliver. Those wishing to join the walk should buy a return rail ticket andcatch the 10.36 train from Norwich, alighting at Worstead.

This is followed, on 18 October, by a 7.5-mile walk fromSheringham to West Beckham via Beeston and is led by Michael Bugden. Purchase areturn rail ticket for the 10.36 train from Norwich and alight at Sheringham.

The walks, via quiet country lanes, woodlands, broads,pretty villages and North Norfolk’s spectacular coast line, take place once amonth until June 2016 and depart from stations such as Reedham, Berney Arms,Lingwood, Worstead, Acle, Sheringham and Oulton Broad North and cover betweenfour and eight miles each.

The Bittern Line and Wherry Lines Community RailPartnerships have organised the walks to encourage greater patronage of therailway lines by local residents and visitors.

The Area Guide, which not only details each walk but alsoincludes rail timetables, information for key towns and villages along theroutes, ideas about things to see and do, an events guide and details of buslinks, is now available at staffed stations along the Bittern Line and WherryLines routes, as well as at Tourist Information Centres, Libraries and todownload from www.bitternline.com and www.wherrylines.org.uk.

The Bittern and Wherry Lines Community Rail Partnershipsexist to promote the lines, work to make improvements in partnership with thetrain operator, Greater Anglia, and engender mutually beneficial links betweenthe railway and the communities they serve.
